Middlewich
Location: adjacent to Junction 18 Midpoint, Cledford Lane, Middlewich
Capacity: 390,000 tonnes per annum
Developer: Covanta Energy
What’s the plan? In March 2009, Covanta Energy put in planning permission to build a 390,000 tonne EfW (Energy from Waste) incinerator next to Junction 18 Midpoint in Middlewich. If the plans get the green light, this could mean that Middlewich will be home to not only a landfill site at Kinderton Lodge, but also an incinerator. The decision to approve or refuse the planning application will be made by Cheshire East Council’s Strategic Planning Group.
Campaign update: on 26th April 2010, Covanta’s plans were rejected by Cheshire East Council. The planning committee voted unanimously against the proposal at the meeting, which was attended by over 300 local residents. Read CHAIN’s press release, the planning officer’s report and the story in the Middlewich Guardian.
Coventa have lodged an appeal against Cheshire East Council’s decision to refuse planning permission. This appeal will now be considered at a Public Enquiry.
The 2nd pre-enquiry meeting was held on 7 February 2011 at Middlewich Civic Hall, Civic Way, Middlewich, to discuss procedural arrangements.
The Pubic Enquiry will start on Tuesday 8th March 2011. It will be held at the Council Chambers, Municipal Buildings, Earle Street, Crewe. It will start at 10am each morning. An evening session has been organised for Thursday 17 March 2011 at Middlewich Civic Hall, starting at 7.30pm, again your attendance will show the strength of our feelings about Coventa’s proposals. See Cheshire East Council website for further details.
